Résumé
This thesis focuses on the discourse of a politician, David Miller, during a series of political campaign debates in the 2003 Toronto mayoral election campaign. Previous research on political campaign discourse suggests that so-called "masculine" communicative styles are the interactional norm for "doing politics" and essential to a politician's success. The present study examines how Miller's communicative style deviates from this norm, as Miller appropriates a mixture of styles associated with traditional notions of "masculinity" and "femininity". The results of the analysis demonstrate how recent sociocultural changes to the public sphere, and politics, specifically, have given rise to a new communication ideology--one which values "private" forms of communication in the public sphere. Indeed, Miller's construction of a successful political identity demonstrates the potential power of this new ideology in the public discourse of politicians.
