Résumé
During the 1960s, Quebec underwent a significant social transformation that brought about the fierce national pride and the ardent secularization that characterize it today. A series of complex events, collectively referred to as the Quiet Revolution, would spark this ideological evolution, leading to a movement away from the conservatism that had been the mainstay of Québécois thought since 1760. The first section of this thesis examines the conservative forces that held the reins of power in Quebec as well as the development of a stifling and repressive sociopolitical situation that made social revolution inevitable. The Quiet Revolution had a literary component as well, as many authors possessing a strong desire for social reform supported it. The second section examines how this auctorial engagement led to the development of a parallel literary trend reflecting the societal shift in ideologies. In their works, writers attacked the foundations of the authoritarianism that had impeded Quebec's social development for two hundred years. Reformist literature would prove to be an invaluable tool in the struggle to shake Quebec from its staunch traditionalism. The third section examines how two novels in particular, 'Le libraire ' by Gérard Bessette and 'Une saison dans la vie d'Emmanuel' by Marie-Claire Blais, gave a voice to the reform movement and a new hope to the people of Quebec. These novels contained the same modern notions, such as the criticism of sociopolitical authoritarianism and the primacy of the individual, that were central components of the Quiet Revolution ideology.
