Résumé
In a paper published in 1954, W. W. Rogosinski [13] initiated a general theory of linear extremum problems for real polynomials and trigonometric polynomials involving certain 'Lp' norms on a measurable subset 'E' of the real line and of [-[pi], [pi]], respectively. He saw such a problem as one of determining the norm of an appropriate functional on the space of all real polynomials of degree at most ' n,' endowed with some weighted 'Lp' norm on 'E' <math> <f> <blkbd>R</blkbd></f> </math>, or of all real trigonometric polynomials of degree at most ' n,' endowed with an 'Lp' norm on ' E' [-[pi], [pi]]. He obtained characterizations for the ' extremals,' in the two cases, but unfortunately could not find enough time to get back to 'systematic applications' he had hoped to do. His results did not receive the attention they deserve, in our opinion. The purpose of this thesis is 'to' elaborate upon the contents of Rogosinski's paper, and also present some applications illustrating the scope of his finding. Keywords: Extremum problems; polynomials; trigonometric polynomials; linear functionals; Hahn-Banach extension theorem; Riesz representation.
