Résumé
This thesis is an investigation of the social impact of nuclear issues in America during the first decade of the nuclear arms race. The four main themes discussed are civil defence, radioactive fallout, accidents and accidental warfare, and the arms race and international control. Using a representative sample of the print media, novels, and public opinion polls, it is shown that the four themes rose to prominence at different times during the decade. This reveals the period to be one in which attitudes, values, and perceptions are in flux. This strongly suggests that the 1950s were not the monolith they are sometimes represented to be.
