Résumé
This thesis is an investigation of disposal of the wash water used for cleaning milk pipeline systems on dairy farms. Improper disposal of this effluent represents a serious environmental problem both in Ontario and other parts of the world. A large part of this problem is that many farmers are reluctant to install weeping bed disposal systems to treat their wash water because these systems are perceived to be unreliable. This project focused on the developing milkhouse management practices which would limit milk and water inputs into these disposal systems, making them less prone to failure. These milkhouse management practices also contribute to the conservation of water, electricity and reduce the use cleaning chemicals and include the feeding of pipeline rinse water to calves, modifying the washing procedure used by farmers and the development of a water conservation milkhouse sink.
