Résumé
The objective of this thesis is to examine aspects of the experience of women in Waterloo County during the Second World War. There is not a wide body of research on Canadian women in the Second World War and what does exist is primarily written at the national level. Ruth Pierson wrote the only major work on the subject and has faced little dissent in the Canadian literature. The only exceptions are two articles written by Jeff Keshen and Barbara Winters. Keshen focuses on revising Pierson's ideas on volunteerism and women in the work force and Winters provides a new look into women's military service in the Second World War. I hope to contribute to the study of women in the Second World War by providing new insights through the study of the reactions of the people of Waterloo County to the changing roles of women. Historians writing about Waterloo County have long focused their attention on the area's Mennonite and German ethnic minorities. This thesis does not address such issues. Waterloo County was selected for study because it was an important industrial centre with two large training bases for women in the services and is the author's place of residence.
