Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the various methods by which people in Scotland were treated for disease during the eighteenth century. It will argue that previous studies have focused too narrowly on the role of the physician in community healthcare. Chapter 1 outlines past approaches to medical history and identifies the practitioners requiring further consideration. Chapter 2 will explore the similarities in the methods and the medical conditions treated by the different branches of healthcare. Chapter 3 provides an analysis of popular medicine, with a particular focus on the building dispute over midwifery. Chapter 4 shall focus on the role of the apothecary within Scottish society. Chapter 5 will review the developing challenge to the traditional roles in healthcare as portrayed by the changing focus of medical literature. In conclusion, this paper will confirm that eighteenth-century Scottish medicine encompassed a distinct and diverse medical culture.
